Loudon County Commission 9/21 Recap, GTFOH

GTFOH Loudon County · 2 weeks ago

The short version: GTFOH Loudon County's recap of a commission workshop on surveillance tech shows a handful of residents pushing back before any ALPR contract gets signed — exactly when public pressure matters most.

Our Take

Credit to GTFOH Loudon County for showing up and recording what most local governments hope nobody watches: a workshop where surveillance technology gets discussed before it's quietly approved on a routine agenda item later. Only five people spoke during public comment, which isn't a lot, but in local government that's often enough to shift tone, especially when commissioners are still feeling out whether a camera network is popular or just assumed to be.

This is the exact stage where Flock Safety and similar vendors want as little scrutiny as possible — a "workshop," not a vote, framed as informational rather than a decision point. But workshops set the narrative for the vote that follows. If residents only show up after a contract is signed, they're negotiating with a system that already exists and already has their plate data flowing into a shared network they never approved.

If you're in Loudon County or anywhere else watching a commission inch toward ALPR adoption, don't wait for the ribbon-cutting. Check our map to see what's already deployed near you, and use our take-action resources to show up at the next meeting with specifics, not just concerns.
