VERIFY: What are Flock cameras, and how are they used in Charlotte?

WCNC · 3 weeks ago

The short version: WCNC's VERIFY segment confirms what we've been saying: Flock cameras are spreading fast in Charlotte with little public debate about who gets access to the data.

Our Take

Credit to WCNC Charlotte for doing basic accountability journalism here — actually asking how these cameras got installed, who can pull the data, and why residents are starting to push back. That's the bare minimum reporters should be doing in every metro area where Flock Safety has quietly become the default surveillance vendor, yet it's still rare enough to be notable.

The 'VERIFY' framing is telling. Local governments and police departments routinely undersell these systems as narrow tools for solving specific crimes, when in practice they create a searchable, timestamped record of where your car has been. Once that data exists and can be queried across agencies, the gap between 'public safety tool' and 'mass location tracking database' gets thin fast — especially with Flock's multi-jurisdiction data-sharing network connecting local reads to a much bigger surveillance web.

If you're in Charlotte or anywhere else wondering whether you're already being logged, check our camera map to see what's been documented near you, and visit our take-action page if you want to push your city council for real transparency and access logs instead of vague reassurances.
