Flock camera contract canceled in Metro Detroit city

FOX 2 Detroit · 2 weeks ago

The short version: Another Metro Detroit city dumps its Flock Safety contract, adding to a growing pattern of local pushback against ALPR surveillance.

Our Take

FOX 2 Detroit is tracking a trend we've been watching closely: another Metro Detroit community has walked away from its Flock Safety contract. We won't pretend to know the internal politics that led to this particular city council vote, but the broader pattern is impossible to ignore. City after city is discovering that "free trial" cameras come with real costs — financial, legal, and civic — once residents start asking who actually controls the data and who's allowed to search it.

Credit to the FOX 2 team for keeping local eyes on a story that national outlets mostly ignore. These cancellations rarely happen because of some dramatic scandal; they happen because a few residents show up to council meetings, ask hard questions about retention periods and audit logs, and refuse to accept vague reassurances. That's the playbook, and it's replicable in any town with a Flock contract up for renewal.

If you want to know whether your own city is running these cameras, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back locally, our take-action page has the tools to get started.
