Flock Safety

MexicanOC · 4 months ago

The short version: A creator called MexicanOC turns a camera on Flock Safety's ALPR network, and the footage is another reminder of how normalized plate surveillance has become.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: MexicanOC took the time to point a camera at Flock Safety's gear and put it in front of an audience that may have never clocked those black-and-white boxes on a pole before. That's half the battle. Most people walk and drive past these things every day without knowing they're feeding a searchable database of where your car has been, when, and how often.

We don't have the transcript in front of us, so we're not going to pretend we know every claim made in the video. But the broader pattern holds regardless of the specifics: a private company is building a nationwide surveillance layer out of local government contracts, and the public conversation about it is still mostly happening in comment sections and YouTube uploads rather than city council chambers where it belongs.

If this video got you curious about whether there's a Flock camera near you, check our map to see what's been documented in your area, and if you want to push back on a contract in your own town, our take action page has concrete steps to get started.
