Detroit ShotSpotter: What is it and how does it work?
The short version: Detroit PD's promo video sells ShotSpotter's gunshot-detection mics as pure public safety, glossing over the tech's spotty accuracy record and expanding surveillance footprint.
Our Take
This is a police department marketing video, not an independent explainer — worth remembering as you watch it. ShotSpotter (now branded SoundThinking) places networks of always-on audio sensors across neighborhoods to detect and locate gunfire. What the video doesn't mention: cities including Chicago, San Antonio, and others have cut ties with the vendor after audits and investigations found high false-positive rates, questionable evidence reliability in court, and no clear link to reduced gun violence. Detroit's own contract renewals have drawn scrutiny for similar reasons.
The bigger picture matters here. ShotSpotter microphones are one more layer in a growing stack of always-listening, always-watching infrastructure — sitting alongside ALPR camera networks like Flock Safety's — that quietly normalizes constant environmental monitoring in the neighborhoods that get it, usually low-income and majority-Black areas, without residents ever voting on it. A department producing a slick explainer video is a PR exercise, not evidence the system works or is worth the privacy tradeoff.
