Carrollton City Council to vote on flock surveillance cameras
The short version: Carrollton's council votes tonight on renewing a contract for 82 Flock ALPR cameras, and FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth's report shows privacy concerns are finally getting airtime.
Our Take
Credit to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth for putting a number on it: 82 cameras is not a pilot program, that's a dragnet. When a mid-sized city council quietly renews a contract that scale of surveillance, it's worth asking who approved the first deal, what the retention and sharing policies actually say, and whether residents ever got a real vote on whether their daily movements should be logged block by block.
These renewal votes matter more than the initial rollouts because they're the moment cities can course-correct, add real audit requirements, or just walk away. Instead, they usually sail through on a consent agenda with vague talk of "solving crime" and little discussion of the thousands of innocent drivers whose plates get scanned for every one actual hit. Carrollton residents deserve to see the audit logs, not just the sales pitch.
