πŸš¨πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ BREAKING β€” Rep. AOC: "Flock Cameras Should be BANNED!"

Pamphlets · 6 days ago

The short version: A creator spotlights AOC's call to ban Flock cameras and Ithaca's local ban, underscoring growing bipartisan unease over ALPR surveillance of everyday movement.

Our Take

Credit to the channel Pamphlets for putting a spotlight on something we've been tracking for a while: the political coalition against ALPR surveillance doesn't split along the lines you'd expect. When a progressive congresswoman and a college town government land in the same place on Flock cameras, that's a signal worth paying attention to, not a partisan talking point.

Ithaca's decision to ban these cameras matters because it proves local control still works. Flock's pitch to city councils is always the same: it's just a tool for catching bad guys. What gets left out is the retention, the data-sharing agreements with other agencies, and the fact that a private company ends up holding a searchable record of where you drive, when, and how often. That's not a crime-fighting tool, that's a surveillance network with a subscription fee.

If you want to know whether your own neighborhood has already been wired up without a public debate like Ithaca's, check our camera map. And if you'd rather your city council do something about it instead of just talking, our take-action page has the tools to push back.
