Flock Cams, Privacy & the Questions Nobody Asks
The short version: A talk-show take on Flock cameras lands on the right question — who's watching the watchers — even buried between tipping discourse and AOC chatter.
Our Take
Credit where it's due: TheEricTConversation is doing something most cable news segments won't — actually pausing on Flock cameras long enough to ask whether 'safety tool' and 'privacy nightmare' have to be mutually exclusive. Sandwiched between tipping fatigue and AOC takes, the Flock segment is a reminder that ALPR surveillance has quietly become dinner-table conversation, which is exactly the kind of mainstream attention this issue needs to break out of niche privacy circles.
The questions nobody asks, as the title puts it, are usually the ones that matter most: who audits the data, how long is it kept, which agencies get to query it without a warrant, and what happens when a system built to catch stolen cars gets repurposed to track people crossing state lines for abortion care or immigration status. Flock's pitch is always safety. The fine print is always access — and access, once granted, rarely shrinks.
