License Plate Readers: A History Before FLOCK #shorts

702EXOTIC · 2 months ago

The short version: A short from 702EXOTIC traces ALPR tech back before Flock, reminding us this surveillance didn't start with one company — and won't end with it either.

Our Take

Credit to 702EXOTIC for pulling the lens back on this one. It's easy to treat Flock Safety like it invented the automated license plate reader, but the truth is messier: this technology has been quietly expanding from border checkpoints and toll booths into neighborhood entrances for decades. Flock didn't start the surveillance buildout — it just made it cheap, networked, and easy to subscribe to like a SaaS product.

That history matters because it shows a pattern: tools built for narrow purposes like border security or commercial fleet tracking have a way of sliding into everyday civilian life with little public debate. Once the infrastructure exists, mission creep is almost guaranteed. Today it's HOAs and small-town police departments; tomorrow it's whoever can pay the subscription fee and get access to a nationwide plate-tracking network.

If you want to see how far that network has already spread into your own community, check out our camera map, and if you're ready to push back locally, our take-action page has concrete steps for getting these cameras challenged at the city council level.
