🚨 Big Brother Is Watching Is Mass Surveillance Now Permanent in America

Freedom Uncut · 5 months ago

The short version: Freedom Uncut's panel asks if mass surveillance is now permanent β€” we'd argue it's already infrastructure, built one Flock camera at a time.

Our Take

Freedom Uncut's panel frames this as a philosophical question β€” convenience versus privacy, a trade we each supposedly get to choose. But that framing misses something important: most of us never got a vote. Nobody held a referendum before thousands of Flock Safety ALPR cameras went up on telephone poles and intersections, quietly logging every car that passes, building a searchable history of where you've been and when. The 'Big Brother' metaphor in the title is almost quaint at this point β€” Orwell's telescreen needed a government to install it. Flock just needs a city council to sign a vendor contract.

What makes this panel's question so uncomfortable isn't the abstract 'would you trade smart tech for privacy' hypothetical β€” it's that the trade already happened, mostly without public debate, and the infrastructure is already in the ground. Credit to Freedom Uncut for putting the permanence question on the table, because that's the real fight now: not whether surveillance exists, but whether it becomes a permanent, unexamined fixture of American life or something communities can still roll back.

If you want to see how close this is to home, check our camera map to find ALPRs near you, and if you think your city shouldn't have signed that contract without asking you first, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back at the local level.
