License Plate Readers: Invasion of Privacy? #shorts

MAHD House Bar Talk · 2 months ago

The short version: A quick-hit YouTube short asks the right question about ALPRs and warrantless location tracking — we unpack why that question deserves a real answer.

Our Take

MAHD House Bar Talk's short gets at something that should bother more people: these cameras aren't just snapping a photo of your plate, they're building a timestamped, geotagged record of where your car has been. Do that enough times across enough intersections and you don't have a traffic tool anymore — you have a movement log on every driver who passes through, no warrant required.

That's the core problem with Flock Safety's network and systems like it. The data gets collected whether or not you're suspected of anything, it often sits in databases for weeks or longer, and in plenty of towns it's shared across agency lines with little public oversight. A ten-second video can raise the alarm, but the real fight is local: city councils approving these contracts, police departments setting retention rules, and residents who mostly have no idea the cameras are even there.

If you want to see how far this has spread, check our camera map to find ALPRs near you, and if you think your community deserves a say before more of these go up, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back.
