Creepy Flock Camera tracking ME with no cars passing by.

Aaron Luhr (ZomBlaze) · 3 months ago

The short version: A Flock camera firing off repeated shots of a pedestrian with no cars around shows these systems watch people, not just plates.

Our Take

Credit to Aaron Luhr (ZomBlaze) for catching something Flock Safety would rather you not notice: the camera didn't care that no vehicles were around. It kept firing every time a human body walked into its frame. That's not "license plate reading" — that's a general-purpose surveillance camera with a cover story.

Flock has spent years marketing these boxes as narrow, traffic-focused tools: read a plate, match it against a hotlist, move on. But footage like this confirms what we've been saying — the hardware captures far more than plates, and the company's own retention and sharing policies mean those extra images of pedestrians don't just vanish. Once a camera is willing to snap a person with no car in sight, the "it's just for stolen cars" pitch stops holding up, and the real question becomes who's reviewing that footage, how long it's kept, and who it gets shared with down the line.

If you want to know whether one of these is already watching your sidewalk, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on a deployment in your town, our take-action page has the tools to start.
