The Flock Cameras Tracking Millions of Americans

Brody Creed · 3 months ago

The short version: A YouTuber lays out how Flock Safety's ALPR network works and why its warrantless, always-on tracking of ordinary drivers should worry every American.

Our Take

Credit to Brody Creed for putting this in front of a general audience: those unassuming solar-powered boxes on your streetlight aren't traffic cameras, they're nodes in a private company's nationwide vehicle-tracking database. Flock Safety doesn't just catch a plate once — it builds a searchable history of where your car has been, who you visited, and how often, all without a warrant and often without your city council ever holding a real public debate about it.

The video's framing of "supporters say crime-solving, critics say mass surveillance" is the right one, because both things are true at once. A tool that can occasionally help close a case is the same tool that logs every commute, church visit, and protest attendance for every driver in range, cop or not. That data doesn't stay local either — Flock's network-sharing features mean a camera in one town can be queried by agencies hundreds of miles away, with little transparency about who's looking and why.

If this video got you looking twice at that little camera on the corner, don't stop there. Check our camera map to see what's already been documented near you, and head to our take-action page for concrete steps to push back at the local level before this becomes permanent infrastructure nobody remembers approving.
