Students HATE Flock cameras on campus

NextGen America · 2 weeks ago

The short version: NextGen America spotlights student backlash against Flock ALPR cameras creeping onto college campuses, and the pushback is a sign more communities are waking up.

Our Take

Credit to NextGen America for putting a camera on something administrators would rather keep quiet: campuses are becoming another front in the license-plate surveillance sprawl. Students didn't sign up for a permanent record of every car that comes and goes from their dorm, their clinic visit, or their late-night study group — but that's exactly what a Flock installation creates, whether the school calls it "safety" or not.

What makes this video worth your time isn't just campus optics, it's the pattern. Flock cameras get pitched as a narrow tool for one problem, then the data sits in a shared network that cops, campus security, and sometimes outside agencies can query without a warrant or much oversight. Students today are tomorrow's renters, workers, and neighbors, and the infrastructure being normalized on campus doesn't disappear at graduation.

If young people are already pushing back before they've even left the dorm, that's a good sign the surveillance-by-default model isn't as inevitable as vendors claim. Check our map to see if Flock has already landed near your school or town, and hit take action if you want to push back before it becomes permanent infrastructure.
