Flock camera will send a drone to your address

Smerdy yerk · 3 months ago

The short version: A YouTuber flags that Flock's ALPR network can now trigger automated drone dispatch to your address, blurring the line between license plate reading and real-time aerial tracking.

Our Take

Creator Smerdy yerk is pointing at something we've been warning about for a while: Flock Safety isn't just cameras anymore. The company has been building out "Drone as First Responder" partnerships, where an ALPR hit or a 911 call can trigger an automated drone launch to a specific address before an officer ever leaves the station. What started as a static license-plate log is turning into a live aerial tracking system, and most residents have no idea their town signed up for it.

The scary part isn't science fiction, it's mission creep. A network built to flag stolen cars can just as easily be repurposed to send a camera over your backyard based on an algorithm's guess, a bad tip, or a plate misread. There's rarely a public vote on drone response protocols, and even rarer is any real audit of how often these flights happen, what they record, or how long that footage sits in a database.

If your town is running Flock hardware, check our map to see what's already watching your streets, and head to take action for ways to push back before cameras in the sky become the next normal.
