AI Can Now Track Your Car Without Your License Plate… This Is Scary
The short version: CEE THEWORLD's video spotlights Flock Safety's 'Vehicle Fingerprint' tech, which tracks cars by color, type, and dents — no plate required.
Our Take
Credit to CEE THEWORLD for putting a spotlight on something we've been warning about for a while: Flock Safety's cameras don't actually need to read your plate to track you. Their so-called 'Vehicle Fingerprint' tech logs color, make, body damage, bumper stickers, roof racks, and other identifying junk, then stitches it all together into a profile that follows your car across a network of cameras. Swap your plate, borrow a car, cover it in primer — doesn't matter. The system was built to route around exactly that kind of evasion.
This matters because the entire public conversation around ALPRs has been anchored to the plate. Lawmakers write policy about 'license plate readers,' city councils debate 'plate data retention,' and meanwhile the hardware has already moved past plates entirely. If the oversight conversation stays stuck on plate numbers, it's missing the actual product Flock is selling: a surveillance net that identifies and tracks vehicles by their physical characteristics, full stop. That's a much bigger ask for public trust than most people realize they've already granted.
If you want to see how close this net already is to your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not just watch this happen, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back at the city-council level.
