RPD launches 'Drones as First Responders' program

KTTC · 1 year ago

The short version: KTTC reports Rochester PD is rolling out a 'Drones as First Responders' program, adding aerial eyes to a surveillance stack that already includes Flock cameras.

Our Take

Credit to KTTC for getting this on the record: another police department is adding drones to its toolkit under the friendly-sounding banner of 'first responders.' It's a clever bit of branding, but let's call it what it is — another always-on eye in the sky, deployed with minimal public debate about retention, footage-sharing, or who gets to watch the feed.

Drone programs rarely stay confined to 911 calls. Once a department has real-time aerial coverage, it tends to find new justifications to keep the cameras airborne, just like ALPR networks quietly grow from 'stolen car recovery' into full-time movement tracking. Pair a drone fleet with a city already blanketed in Flock cameras and you get a surveillance system that can watch you from the street and from above, with far less transparency than either technology alone.

If you want to see how exposed your own neighborhood already is on the ground, check our camera map, and if you think your city council should be asking harder questions before signing off on programs like this, our take-action page has a place to start.
