Siloam Springs talks Flock cameras
The short version: Siloam Springs officials are weighing Flock Safety cameras, and 40/29 News' report is a reminder that these fights are often decided before most residents even know they're happening.
Our Take
Credit to 40/29 News for putting a camera on this discussion, because that's exactly the problem with how Flock Safety contracts usually get approved: a council meeting, some vague talk about "solving crime," and a vote that happens before most residents even know there's a proposal on the table. Siloam Springs deserves a real public debate, not a rubber stamp.
What's missing from most of these local news segments, and this one is no exception given the format, is the part where someone asks the hard questions. Who audits the data? How long is it retained? Which outside agencies get access to the plate reads logged on every car driving through town? Flock's sales pitch is always about catching bad guys, but the infrastructure doesn't care who's driving past, it logs everyone, law-abiding or not, and builds a travel history that didn't exist before.
If you're in Siloam Springs or anywhere in Northwest Arkansas, now is the time to find out if these cameras are already up or on the agenda. Check our map to see what's been deployed near you, and if your city is still deciding, head to our take-action page for ways to push back before the vote happens, not after.
