Inside LVMPD Fusion Watch: How Las Vegas Uses AI, ALPR & Cameras to Keep 45M Visitors Safe

Flock · 11 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promo video showcases LVMPD's 'Fusion Watch' surveillance hub, but a company selling the cameras isn't exactly a neutral narrator on their necessity or safety.

Our Take

Notice who's talking here: this isn't a news outlet or an independent researcher walking through the LVMPD's surveillance setup — it's Flock Safety itself, the company that sells the cameras, producing a glossy showcase of its own product in action. When the vendor narrates the story of how indispensable its technology is to public safety, that's marketing, not journalism, and it deserves the same skepticism you'd give any sales pitch.

The '45 million visitors' framing is doing a lot of work to justify a dense web of ALPR cameras and AI-assisted monitoring across a city that residents actually live in, not just pass through. Tourist traffic gets used again and again to rationalize permanent surveillance infrastructure that scans and stores the plates of everyone — locals included — regardless of whether they've done anything wrong. 'Fusion Watch' is a nice name for a system that centralizes tracking data on an entire metro area with minimal public input into how long that data sits around or who gets to query it.

Las Vegas isn't unique — this is the same playbook rolling out in cities everywhere, and it's worth checking whether it's happened near you. Take a look at our camera map to see what's already been deployed, and if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your own community, our take-action page has concrete steps to get started.
