DARTH VADER APPROVES OF FLOCK CAMERA SURVEILLANCE
The short version: A Darth Vader cosplayer's satirical pro-Flock testimony at a San Diego council meeting, captured by America Isn't Real, lands harder as commentary than most sincere defenses of ALPR surveillance.
Our Take
Credit where it's due: America Isn't Real caught a moment that says more about the Flock debate than a dozen council staff reports. A guy in a Darth Vader costume walks up to the mic at a San Diego Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee meeting, breathes heavy into the chamber audio, and tells officials the Emperor loves Flock because it helps "surveil the rebel scum." It's a joke, but it's not really a joke — it's just the quiet part of ALPR advocacy said out loud in a helmet.
That's the trick with automated license plate readers: the pitch is always about catching bad guys, but the architecture doesn't care who's driving. Every plate that rolls past a Flock camera gets logged, timestamped, and stored, whether it belongs to a carjacker or someone driving to a protest, a clinic, or a rival's neighborhood. A costume and a punchline made that point to a room full of elected officials faster than most public comment ever does, and it's worth noting these meetings are exactly where these systems get approved or rejected — often with little public awareness until cameras are already bolted to poles.
If you want to know whether your own city already has this hardware watching its streets, check our camera map, and if you'd rather your council not need a Sith Lord to make the stakes obvious, our take-action page has the tools to show up before the vote, not after.
