Reason Given, Ep. 12: 174 Flock networks, 3 searches

Magnetic Norse · 4 days ago

The short version: Magnetic Norse's latest 'Reason Given' episode shows LA County Sheriff's deputies running 174 Flock network searches off three thin, unverified justifications.

Our Take

Credit to Magnetic Norse for keeping this series going. "Reason Given" has become one of the few consistent efforts to actually audit the audit trail Flock Safety claims makes its system accountable — and Episode 12, digging into Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department searches, lands on the same uncomfortable finding as the rest: the "reason" field is a formality, not a safeguard. One search justification gets typed in, and 174 networks of cameras across the country light up in response. Nobody checks whether that reason holds up. Nobody has to.

This is the core problem with the Flock model that marketing materials never mention. The system is built on trust — trust that an officer's one-line justification is accurate, trust that supervisors are reviewing searches after the fact, trust that departments will report misuse when they find it. Investigations like this one keep showing that trust isn't earned. A handful of vague words can unlock a nationwide surveillance network, and the oversight everyone points to turns out to be largely theoretical. When one department can pivot from three searches into 174 networks of other agencies' cameras, the "it's just for serious crimes" pitch stops holding up.
