Flock Safety LPR Technology Supports Louisville Investigations

Flock · 7 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promotional video touts two Louisville recoveries as proof of ALPR value, but anecdotes aren't evidence of safe, accountable surveillance.

Our Take

This one comes straight from Flock Safety's corporate channel, not a journalist or a public records request — so treat it like the ad it is. Two feel-good anecdotes about a carjacking and a stolen Accord are being used to justify a network of cameras that logs the movements of every driver, guilty or not, who passes a reader. That's the trick: the company gets to pick the two cases that worked and never has to show you the thousands of scans that did nothing but build a location history on innocent people.

Louisville Metro, like hundreds of other departments, doesn't disclose much about how long this data is kept, who can query it, or whether it's shared with ICE, out-of-state agencies, or private investigators. 'It helped find a stolen car' is not the same as 'it was used responsibly and sparingly.' Flock knows the carjacking story sells; it's much harder to sell the audit logs.

If you want to know whether Louisville's drivers are already being logged this way, check our camera map for nearby readers, and if you'd rather your city not take Flock's word for it, see our take-action guide for pushing your council toward real transparency and retention limits.
