It Isn't A Speed Camera. It's A Memory #Shorts

Flock U · 1 month ago

The short version: Flock U's short cuts through the 'it's not facial recognition, so relax' deflection to name the real threat: permanent, searchable, shareable location history on every driver.

Our Take

Flock U nails the point we keep hammering: the debate over whether ALPRs do facial recognition is a distraction. Nobody needs your face when they've got your plate, your car's make and color, and a timestamped location — logged every single time you drive past a pole, whether you're a suspect in anything or just someone running to the grocery store. That's not a speed camera. That's a permanent record of where you've been.

The line that matters most here is "shared with whoever your city agreed to share it with." Most residents have no idea what that agreement actually says, how long the data sits in a database, or which agencies outside their town can query it. One camera might feel harmless. A statewide network with months or years of retention is a mass movement-tracking system built without a warrant requirement in sight.

Credit to Flock U for making that distinction land in under a minute. If you want to see how many of these cameras are already watching your own routes, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on your city council or local agency, our take-action page has the tools to start.
