Keith Self on Flock and Islamification

Texas Scorecard · 1 month ago

The short version: Texas Scorecard's Michael Quinn Sullivan talks ALPR surveillance with Rep. Keith Self, but muddies a real issue with unrelated culture-war framing.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: Texas Scorecard's Michael Quinn Sullivan got a sitting member of Congress, Rep. Keith Self, on record saying the surveillance state has gone too far. That's a useful data point. Concern about Flock Safety's camera networks isn't a left or right thing — it's a "who's watching me and why" thing, and it's good to see it show up on a conservative Texas outlet's channel.

But the video does the issue no favors by bolting Flock criticism onto a segment literally titled around "Islamification." Mass ALPR surveillance is a problem because it tracks everyone's movements without a warrant, stores it in databases cops and feds can query without much oversight, and does it to the law-abiding and the suspected alike. That argument doesn't need a culture-war hook to land — grafting one on just gives people an easy reason to dismiss the real concern as partisan noise instead of the bipartisan civil-liberties fight it actually is.

If you want the substance without the baggage, skip the framing and look at what's actually happening in your town. Check our camera map to see where Flock readers are logging plates near you, and if you want to push back locally, our take-action page has the tools to do it.
