How License Plate Readers Help Police Catch Fugitives | Police Bodycam
The short version: Patrol Vault's bodycam clip shows an ALPR flagging a wanted suspect, but one tidy success story doesn't justify scanning millions of innocent drivers daily.
Our Take
Patrol Vault's bodycam footage is exactly the kind of clip Flock Safety and police PR departments love to circulate: a plate reader flags a hit, officers make a clean arrest, case closed. Credit to the channel for showing the raw mechanics of how these stops actually unfold on the ground. But a single feel-good catch is not evidence that blanketing every street corner with always-on cameras is a reasonable trade-off for a free society.
What these videos never show is the other 99.9% of scans — the thousands of innocent people whose travel patterns, visits to clinics, churches, protests, or ex-partners' homes get logged into a database with little oversight, murky retention rules, and a growing list of agencies who can query it without a warrant. One successful fugitive arrest doesn't erase the risk of wrongful stops, data breaches, or quiet mission creep into immigration enforcement and political surveillance that departments rarely advertise.
If your town has these cameras, you deserve to know it — check our map to see what's already watching your streets, and head to take action if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR deployment where you live.
