Episode 251 - Inside the Flock Controversy with Mark Keierleber and Michael Klein

K12 Tech Talk · 8 months ago

The short version: K12 Tech Talk's Chris, Josh, and Mark sit down with journalist Mark Keierleber and Michael Klein to unpack how Flock's surveillance reach is creeping into school districts.

Our Take

Credit to the K12 Tech Talk crew for pulling this conversation into the open. Flock Safety built its brand on "neighborhood" ALPR cameras, but the moment that infrastructure starts touching school districts, the stakes change. Kids don't get a vote on data retention policies, and parents rarely get a straight answer about who's watching the parking lot, who has access to the footage, and how long it sits in a database before it's shared with agencies nobody in the PTA ever approved.

That's what makes reporting like Mark Keierleber's valuable — someone actually asking who signed the contract, what the vendor promised, and what got glossed over in the school board meeting minutes. Districts are being sold convenience and safety, but the actual governance conversation — access logs, third-party sharing, ICE and law enforcement pipelines — tends to happen after the cameras are already bolted to a pole. That's the pattern with Flock everywhere: deploy first, debate later.

If your kid's school, or your town, has quietly added ALPR cameras, it's worth checking whether they're already mapped on our tracker. And if you want to push back before a school board rubber-stamps another surveillance contract, our take-action guide walks through what to ask and who to pressure.
