Darth Vader Crashes City Council! 🌌

Digital Bullet · 1 month ago

The short version: A Darth Vader-costumed protester turned a San Diego City Council meeting into viral theater to call out surveillance creep, as captured by YouTuber Digital Bullet.

Our Take

Public comment periods are usually the most boring three minutes of local government, which is exactly why a guy in a Darth Vader costume showing up to call out surveillance works so well. Digital Bullet caught the moment, and whatever you think of the theatrics, it did what a thousand policy memos couldn't: it got people watching a city council meeting about ALPRs and camera networks who normally never would.

San Diego isn't a random choice of city either β€” it's been a real battleground over Flock Safety cameras and who gets access to the data they collect. Costumed stunts aside, the underlying issue is dead serious: license plate readers quietly log where everyone drives, and that data doesn't always stay local or get used the way councils promise when they first approve it.

If you want the unfunny, detailed version of what's happening in your own city, check our camera map to see what's already been deployed near you, and hit take action for ways to push back before your own council meeting needs a Sith Lord to get anyone's attention.
