Real time investigation centers powered by tools like Flock ALPR

Flock · 7 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promo video sells San Francisco's real-time crime center as a public safety win, glossing over the mass surveillance infrastructure it depends on.

Our Take

This one's straight from Flock's marketing team, so take the framing with a grain of salt. "Real time investigation centers" is a friendly way of describing rooms where police and private analysts fuse ALPR feeds, camera networks, and other data streams to track vehicles and people across a city — in this case, San Francisco. Flock wants you to see "streamlined information flow" and "informed decision making." We see a centralized surveillance hub built on a network of cameras that most residents never voted for and can't opt out of.

These fusion-style centers are exactly why ALPR expansion matters beyond the individual camera on your corner. Once plate reads get piped into a real-time crime center, they don't just solve one case — they become part of a searchable, retained record of where everyone drives, all the time. Vendors love to showcase the "public safety" wins; they're far less eager to talk about audit trails, data-sharing agreements with other agencies, or how long that footage sits in a database.

If Flock is running infrastructure like this near you, it's worth knowing where the cameras actually are. Check our camera map to see what's been documented in your area, and visit take action if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR deployment in your community.
