Leaders in Sherwood defend Flock camera system

THV11 · 2 months ago

The short version: Sherwood officials are circling the wagons around their Flock cameras, but 'trust us' isn't an oversight policy — it's a PR strategy.

Our Take

THV11's report out of Sherwood follows a pattern we see in city after city: install the cameras quietly, wait for residents to notice, then send officials out to reassure everyone that it's all perfectly fine, actually. Credit to THV11 for at least airing the pushback instead of running an unquestioned press release dressed up as news — that's more than a lot of local coverage manages.

But "leaders defend the system" is not the same as leaders answering the actual questions that matter: who has access to this data, how long is it retained, is it shared with ICE or other outside agencies, and what happens when an officer runs plates for personal reasons instead of an active investigation? Sherwood's defense, like most defenses of Flock, leans on anecdotes about solved crimes while skating past the fact that every plate in town is logged, timestamped, and stored whether or not its owner is ever suspected of anything. That's not a crime-fighting tool with occasional side effects — it's a permanent tracking network that happens to also fight crime sometimes.

If you live in or around Sherwood, don't just take the city's word for it. Check our camera map to see what's actually been deployed near you, and if you want to push back at a council meeting or public hearing, our take-action page has templates and talking points to help you do it effectively.
