AI 143 - They’re Scanning Your Plates. Here’s Who Sees It.

bzboi's tinkerings · 11 months ago

The short version: An AI-generated YouTube short from bzboi's tinkerings boils down the Flock plate-reader problem to one blunt question: who actually sees your scans, and the honest answer is 'too many people, with too little oversight.'

Our Take

Credit where it's due: bzboi's tinkerings made this one-minute short by feeding a prompt into an AI video generator, and the result still lands on the core issue faster than most local news segments do. Law enforcement, private security contractors, and sometimes third-party vendors can all touch Flock's plate-scan data, and there's no consistent national rulebook governing retention, access, or transparency. That patchwork is exactly why lawsuits against Flock are gaining traction — because "trust us" isn't a policy.

It's a little ironic that a video about unaccountable automated surveillance systems was itself generated by an automated AI system with minimal human oversight. But the irony doesn't undercut the point. Whether a camera network is built by a company or a script is built by a machine, the same question applies: who's watching the watchers? Right now, for ALPR data, the answer is inconsistent at best.

If you want to see how dense this scanning network actually is where you live, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on unchecked plate surveillance in your city or state, our take-action page has concrete next steps.
