AZ FLOCK CAMERAS

Teri Ann Hourihan · 2 months ago

The short version: An Arizona gubernatorial candidate, Teri Ann Hourihan, is campaigning on reining in Flock Safety ALPRs with audits, retention limits, and data-breach safeguards.

Our Take

When a candidate for governor puts license-plate surveillance in a campaign video, that's a signal the issue has broken out of activist circles and into mainstream politics. Teri Ann Hourihan's pitch hits the notes we've been hammering for years: ALPR data needs hard retention limits, real auditing, and protection against being shared or breached without accountability. That she's naming Flock Safety specifically shows how much this one company's camera network has become the face of the surveillance debate nationwide.

We're not in the business of endorsing candidates, and campaign promises are cheap until they're written into statute. But the fact that 'strict accountability' and 'unconstitutional abuse' are now phrases a gubernatorial hopeful uses on camera tells you Flock's rapid, low-oversight expansion has created real political exposure. Arizonans curious how many of these cameras are already watching their commutes should check our camera map before deciding how much they trust any promise to rein this in.

Credit to Teri Ann Hourihan for putting a surveillance-accountability platform on the record — that's a rarer thing than it should be. Whether or not she wins, the pressure needs to keep coming from voters, not just candidates. If you want to push your own city council or state legislature toward the same audits and limits she's describing, our take-action page is the place to start.
