Dunwoody police first in state to launch drone technology improving 911 response times

Atlanta News First · 2 years ago

The short version: Dunwoody PD becomes Georgia's first Drone as First Responder program, and Atlanta News First frames it as a pure response-time win with zero scrutiny.

Our Take

Credit to Atlanta News First for getting the footage, but this segment reads like a police department press release with a camera crew attached. "Drone as First Responder" programs sound great in a 90-second package: a quadcopter beats officers to a 911 call, gives eyes on scene, maybe de-escalates things before anyone arrives. What doesn't make the cut is any mention of how long that footage is kept, who can access it, whether it's cross-referenced with license plate data or facial recognition, or what happens when the drone captures a backyard, a bedroom window, or a protest that has nothing to do with the original call.

Dunwoody is now the first in Georgia to roll this out, which means it's a template other departments will point to when they ask city councils for the same toolkit. That's exactly why the lack of policy detail here matters — DFR programs quietly expand the aerial surveillance footprint over entire neighborhoods, not just the address on the call sheet, and once the infrastructure and the public comfort level exist, mission creep tends to follow. Flock cameras taught us that lesson on the ground; drones are the same play in the air.

If you live in or around Dunwoody, this is worth watching closely as it scales. Check our camera map to see what's already tracking your area, and use our take-action resources if you want to push your local officials for real transparency before drone footage becomes the next quiet data stream feeding into a bigger surveillance system.
