Flock Cameras Caught Tracking FACES, Not Just Cars!#flock #privacy #echobellan

The short version: A YouTube creator flags that Flock's ALPR cameras may be capturing more than plates — raising fresh questions about facial data and scope creep.

Our Take

Credit to EchoBellan for putting a spotlight on something we've long warned about: these systems are marketed as 'license plate readers,' but the cameras themselves are high-resolution imaging devices capable of capturing a lot more than plates. Whether or not facial recognition is formally part of Flock's feature set at any given moment, the hardware is the hardware — and once images are collected, retained, and run through AI classifiers for 'vehicle fingerprinting,' the line between tracking cars and tracking people gets blurry fast.

This is exactly the kind of scope creep that should worry anyone who was told these cameras were just for catching stolen cars or Amber Alerts. Systems get installed for one narrow purpose, then quietly expanded through software updates, new features, or data-sharing agreements — often with zero public input. If a camera can be upgraded overnight to analyze faces, bumper stickers, or who's riding in the passenger seat, the public deserves to know that before the cameras go up, not after a creator digs it up on YouTube.

We can't verify every technical claim in the video ourselves, but it's a reminder of why independent scrutiny matters so much in this space — companies like Flock aren't exactly rushing to disclose capabilities.
