FLOCK VS. ALPRS: A DEEP DIVE

WPDE ABC15 · 4 days ago

The short version: WPDE ABC15's explainer on Flock vs. other ALPR brands is a good primer, but the real issue isn't the logo on the pole — it's the network.

Our Take

Credit to WPDE ABC15 for doing the basic consumer-reports work most local newsrooms skip: breaking down what actually separates a Flock Safety camera from the dozen other ALPR brands popping up on utility poles nationwide. That's useful groundwork, because most residents can't tell a license plate reader from a traffic cam, let alone know which company is vacuuming up their travel patterns.

But here's what tends to get lost in a "which brand does what" segment: the brand almost doesn't matter. Whether it's Flock, Motorola, Rekor, or a county's own in-house rig, the underlying problem is the same — a camera is logging your plate, your location, and your timestamp, often without a warrant, and frequently sharing that data across jurisdictions and even with federal agencies. Feature comparisons are nice, but they shouldn't distract from the bigger question: should this surveillance infrastructure exist on this scale at all, regardless of logo?
