If the person selling automated plate readers doesn't want his own movements tracked, that tells you everything about how this technology actually feels from the inside of the panopticon.

The bigger point the video raises is one we keep hammering on: correlation isn't causation. Crime has been falling nationally for reasons researchers are still debating — post-pandemic normalization, economic shifts, policing changes — and Flock's marketing conveniently claims credit for a trend it didn't create. Meanwhile the false positive problem is not theoretical. Wrong reads on plates have already led to cars being pulled over and people being detained for crimes they didn't commit, all because a camera's algorithm made a guess.
