Know Leon County Ep 16: Who's Watching? Surveillance, Transparency, and Taking Action

Know Leon County · 3 months ago

The short version: Know Leon County's podcast digs into local ALPR surveillance and transparency, echoing the same accountability gaps we track nationwide.

Our Take

Credit to the Know Leon County podcast crew for putting surveillance on the local agenda. Most residents have no idea how many license plate readers are bolted to poles in their own county, who has access to the data, or how long it's kept — and a community conversation like this is exactly how that starts to change. Episode 16 frames the right questions: who's watching, who's accountable, and what can ordinary people actually do about it.

That last part is where we think the real work begins. Flock Safety and similar ALPR networks have spread across Florida and the country with little public debate, often approved in a single council vote with no retention policy, no audit trail, and no opt-out for residents. Transparency segments like this one matter because they put local officials on record and give neighbors language to push back with — at the next commission meeting, not just in the comment section.

If Leon County residents want to see exactly where these cameras are mounted near them, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push your local government for real answers, our take-action guide has the tools to get started.
