The Government is Using Your Doorbell (& Cameras) To Spy on YOU! | IoT News Alerts #shorts

IoT Secure · 4 years ago

The short version: IoT Secure's short flags that Ring, Google, and SimpliSafe can hand doorbell footage to police, a reminder that the surveillance dragnet isn't just ALPRs on poles — it's on your porch too.

Our Take

Credit to IoT Secure for the quick hit, but the story underneath deserves more than 60 seconds of attention. Doorbell cameras were sold to homeowners as a way to catch porch pirates, not to become an on-demand video pipeline for law enforcement. Yet here we are: police can request footage, companies can comply without a warrant in many cases, and the resulting network of millions of private cameras starts to look a lot like the automated license plate reader grids we track every day — just aimed at your front steps instead of the street.

This is the same pattern we see with Flock Safety: convenience and 'safety' framing used to normalize a surveillance infrastructure that nobody voted on. A Ring camera on every block plus an ALPR on every corner means your comings and goings, your visitors, your car, all get logged somewhere you don't control and can't audit. The tech is different, the outcome is the same — a permanent, searchable record of ordinary life built without real consent.

If you want to see how far this has already spread in your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on the policies that let this data flow to police with little oversight, our take-action page has concrete next steps.
