Lorain police reveal how Flock cameras helped lead to arrest of teen accused of killing grandfather

WKYC Channel 3 · 2 months ago

The short version: WKYC's Lorain report credits Flock cameras in a grandfather's murder case, but one solved case doesn't justify a blanket ALPR dragnet.

Our Take

WKYC Channel 3's report out of Lorain is the standard Flock Safety press-conference playbook: a tragic crime, a fast arrest, and local police crediting camera networks and multi-agency data sharing for closing the case. Nobody disputes that a teen accused of killing his grandfather belongs behind bars, and solid police work deserves credit. But "the cameras helped" is doing a lot of work in these stories, and it's almost never accompanied by any accounting of how many other people's movements got logged, cross-referenced, and shared across jurisdictions to get there.

That's the trade we're never shown the receipt for. Every one of these success stories is used to justify expanding a system that scans and stores the plates of everyone driving through town, guilty or not, with retention policies and inter-agency sharing agreements that most residents have never seen and never approved. Lorain's win gets a press conference; the thousands of innocent drivers whose data sat in that same database get nothing — no notice, no opt-out, no accountability for who else queried their travel history.
