Flock Safety Forced Into Major Security Overhaul Amid Nationwide License Reader Backlash #Shorts

Aletheia_TechNews · 3 weeks ago

The short version: Flock Safety's 'mandatory' overhaul sounds reassuring, but voluntary fixes from a surveillance vendor don't erase the core problem: a nationwide ALPR dragnet with little independent oversight.

Our Take

Credit to Aletheia_TechNews for flagging this one — when a company like Flock Safety starts announcing "mandatory" security and policy overhauls, it's worth asking what forced their hand. Spoiler: it's not a sudden attack of conscience. It's mounting pressure from journalists, researchers, and communities who've spent the last couple years documenting misuse, data breaches, and mission creep in Flock's ALPR network.

Here's the thing about self-imposed "overhauls": they're written by the company being scrutinized, enforced by the company being scrutinized, and audited by... the company being scrutinized. That's not oversight, that's PR. Real accountability means public audit logs, binding local ordinances, data retention limits set by elected officials rather than corporate policy teams, and actual consequences when departments or employees abuse access. A blog post about new guardrails doesn't give you any of that.

We'd also note that every one of these "we're tightening things up" announcements is tacit admission that the previous setup wasn't tight enough — meaning plates, location histories, and movement patterns of ordinary people were sitting in a system without the safeguards Flock now says it needs. If you want to know whether a camera near you is part of this network, check our map, and if you'd rather not wait for a vendor to grade its own homework, see what you can do locally at take action.
