What is the best way to deploy license plate readers?

Flock · 2 years ago

The short version: Flock's own hosts walk through 'best practices' for blanketing cities, businesses, and neighborhoods with ALPRs — a sales pitch dressed up as an explainer.

Our Take

This one comes straight from the source: Flock Safety's own Dalton and Jamie, talking through 'how to deploy' their cameras for 'maximum impact.' That phrase is worth sitting with. When the company that profits from every pole-mounted reader is the one coaching cops and HOAs on saturation strategy, you're not watching neutral tech education — you're watching a sales funnel with a documentary filter.

The video's drift from police departments to private businesses to residential neighborhoods is the real story here, even if it's told as a feel-good progression. Each step normalizes a wider surveillance footprint with less oversight. A city council at least holds public meetings before authorizing a feed of every car's movements. A strip mall parking lot or a subdivision gate does not. That's how a technology sold as a tool for solving the rare homicide ends up logging the daily movements of everyone who drives to church, the pharmacy, or a protest.

Flock gets to pick which case studies make the highlight reel. We'd rather readers see the full map of where these cameras actually are before deciding how much 'maximum impact' they want in their own neighborhood.
