META built DATA Centres so quickly they had to use tents!

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 3 months ago

The short version: A Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency video shows Meta racing to throw up tent-covered data centers — a reminder that surveillance infrastructure scales faster than public oversight.

Our Take

The channel Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency put out a video showing Meta erecting data centers so fast the company resorted to literal tents to house the servers. Whatever you think of the channel's broader framing, the underlying image is worth sitting with: the infrastructure behind mass data collection isn't being built carefully or deliberately — it's being thrown up as fast as physically possible, oversight be damned.

That same "move fast, build now, ask questions never" mentality is exactly what we track at the street level with ALPR networks. Flock Safety and its peers aren't waiting for state legislatures to finish debating privacy protections before bolting more cameras onto poles. Tents today, permanent facilities tomorrow — the pattern is the same whether it's a tech giant's server farm or a surveillance vendor's camera count: infrastructure first, accountability later, if ever.

Every one of these buildouts, whether it's storing your social data or logging your license plate, is banking on the public not paying attention fast enough to stop it. We think the opposite approach works better. Check our camera map to see what's already been deployed near you, and head to take-action if you want to push back before the next tent goes up.
