New Flock License-Plate Reader Technology Helps Track and Protect Pretty Girls

See_Cops_Lie · 2 months ago

The short version: A creator at See_Cops_Lie uses biting sarcasm to expose how Flock's "public safety" branding masks a system that tracks everyone, not just the people it claims to protect.

Our Take

The title alone is the joke: nobody at Flock Safety is building a camera network to "protect pretty girls." See_Cops_Lie is using satire to needle a much more serious point — that ALPR marketing leans hard on sympathetic, narrow use cases (missing persons, stalkers, Amber Alerts) to sell a dragnet that actually logs the plate, location, and timestamp of every car that passes, regardless of who's driving or why.

That's the trick of this technology's PR. The pitch is always the rare, dramatic rescue story. The reality is a searchable database of everyone's daily movements, built with zero individualized suspicion and often zero public vote. Framing it as a tool to "protect" a specific group obscures who's actually being watched: all of us, all the time, including people who've never been accused of anything.

Credit to See_Cops_Lie for using humor to puncture that messaging. If you want to see how far this has spread in your own town, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not wait for a viral video to find out your commute is being logged, our take-action page has steps for pushing back at the local level.
