Secret Surveillance Your Data, Their Cameras, Our Rights

Shasta Unfiltered · 6 months ago

The short version: Shasta Unfiltered spotlights how quietly Flock cameras have spread through local communities without residents getting a real say.

Our Take

Credit to Shasta Unfiltered for doing what local reporters used to do: asking who put these cameras up, who's watching the footage, and why nobody voted on it. That's the pattern we see county after county — a vendor demo, a quiet council vote, and suddenly every car entering town is logged, timestamped, and stored in a database most residents never knew existed.

The "secret" framing in the title isn't clickbait. Flock's own contracts often limit what local agencies can disclose, and plenty of city councils approve these systems with minimal public hearing. Rural counties like Shasta are especially easy targets because there's less press scrutiny and fewer people asking hard questions about retention periods, data sharing with federal agencies, or whether a sheriff's deputy can run your plate just because he's curious.

If you're in Shasta County or anywhere else, check our camera map to see what's already watching your street, and head to take-action for a template to bring to your next council meeting. Local pressure is still the fastest way to force transparency before these networks become permanent infrastructure.
