Anderson County commissioners host town hall about Flock cameras

WBIR Channel 10 · 3 weeks ago

The short version: Anderson County commissioners held a public town hall on Flock ALPRs, a rare moment of real accountability that should be the norm everywhere these cameras go up.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: WBIR Channel 10 is documenting something that almost never happens in the Flock rollout playbook — an actual town hall where commissioners face residents before or after cameras start scanning every plate that rolls through the county. Most jurisdictions skip straight to a quiet vendor contract and a press release about "fighting crime." Anderson County at least put the conversation on the record, which gives us something to point to.

But a town hall is only as good as what comes out of it. Did commissioners disclose who has access to the data, how long it's retained, whether it's shared with ICE or out-of-state agencies through Flock's national network, or what audit trail exists to catch misuse? Those are the questions that matter, and "we use it to solve crimes" isn't an answer to any of them. A single public meeting doesn't substitute for binding policy, independent audits, or a sunset clause residents can actually enforce.

If you're in Anderson County or anywhere else wondering what's already watching your commute, check our camera map to see what's been documented nearby, and use our take-action guide if you want to push your own commissioners toward the same kind of transparency — followed by real limits.
