The Clearview Database That's Still Scraping: DOJ Can't Stop It #Shorts

Tech Exposed · 5 months ago

The short version: Tech Exposed highlights how Clearview AI keeps scraping faces despite fines and deletion orders — the same regulatory toothlessness we see with ALPR networks.

Our Take

Credit to Tech Exposed for packaging this into a tight short: regulators poke at Clearview AI, Clearview AI shrugs, and the scraping continues. Since the video is AI-assisted, we'd treat the specific figures — 50 billion faces, four million ICE queries a year — as claims to verify rather than gospel. But the broader pattern it's pointing at is real and well-documented: facial recognition companies and ALPR networks alike have built business models around the bet that fines arrive years after the data's already been harvested, shared, and baked into government workflows.

That's the throughline between Clearview and Flock Safety. A deletion order or a consent decree sounds like accountability, but it doesn't claw back the queries already run, the departments already plugged in, or the next contract already signed. Flock's ALPR cameras work the same way — quietly networked into a national lookup system, with audit logs that depend entirely on agencies behaving honestly, and with very little that stops a camera from staying live long after a city council stops asking questions about it.

If a federal fine and an FTC order can't slow down a face-scraping database, don't expect a sternly worded email to pull a plate camera off a pole either. Check our map to see what's watching near you, and if you want to push back locally, our take-action page has concrete steps.
