Chambers County Sheriff hosts town hall on Automated License Plate Readers
The short version: A Texas sheriff finally let residents grill him on Flock cameras in public — exactly the kind of accountability moment every county deserves.
Our Take
Credit to KFDM for covering this one, and credit to Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne for doing something a lot of local officials avoid: standing in a room and taking questions about ALPRs face to face. Town halls like this are rare, and they matter precisely because so much of the Flock rollout nationwide has happened through quiet council votes, budget line items, and vendor demos aimed at command staff rather than the public footing the bill and living under the cameras.
We don't know everything that was said in that room, but the fact that "the Flock camera debate took center stage" tells you the public isn't just nodding along anymore. People are asking who gets access to the data, how long it's stored, whether ICE or other outside agencies can query a local network, and whether any of this has actually reduced crime or just generated a new revenue-and-surveillance pipeline. Those are the right questions, and they deserve real answers, not just vendor talking points recycled by the sheriff's office.
If you're in Chambers County or anywhere else with Flock gear going up, don't wait for a town hall to be scheduled near you. Check our camera map to see what's already been deployed close to home, and use our take-action resources to push your own officials toward the kind of transparency on display here.
