Florida county approves removal of Flock license plate readers off county right-of-ways
The short version: Walton County, Florida commissioners voted unanimously to pull Flock ALPR cameras off county roads, defying the sheriff's defense of the surveillance network.
Our Take
Score one for local democracy. Walton County commissioners didn't just grumble about Flock Safety's license plate readers — they voted unanimously to rip them off county right-of-ways. That's a rare and encouraging outcome in a state where Flock has planted cameras in dozens of jurisdictions with little public debate. Credit to WEAR Channel 3 News for capturing the pushback directly from elected officials, including Commissioner Danny Glidewell's blunt admission that he's "not very comfortable" with cameras conducting what amounts to surveillance on county residents.
Sheriff Mike Adkinson's response is the same playbook we've seen nationwide: downplay the technology as just a "brand," insist some cameras are for parks, and frame public concern as "misunderstanding." But the misunderstanding cuts the other way. Flock's network logs every passing vehicle, time-stamped and searchable, whether or not you're suspected of anything. Law enforcement doesn't need a warrant to query it, and the data can be shared well beyond the county that installed the camera. That's not a parking-lot security camera — it's a dragnet, and Walton County commissioners seem to understand the difference even if their sheriff doesn't.
This fight isn't over — removal votes get appealed, re-litigated, or quietly reversed once sheriffs lean on commissioners. But Walton County joins a growing list of Florida communities pushing back, and that momentum matters.
