Did Flock Get Hacked?

Flock · 4 months ago

The short version: Flock's own CISO tries to reassure the public after hacking claims, but a company grading its own security homework isn't the same as independent oversight.

Our Take

Notice who's answering the question of whether Flock got hacked: Flock. When a surveillance vendor's Chief Information Security Officer goes on camera to explain away "claims" about his own company's product getting compromised, that's not transparency — it's damage control dressed up as a tech briefing. We'd love to see an independent security audit, public vulnerability disclosures, and real third-party penetration testing results, not a reassuring video from the guy whose job depends on everyone believing the system is safe.

This matters because Flock cameras aren't just reading plates for one police department — they're feeding a nationwide, searchable database that thousands of agencies tap into, often with little local oversight on who else can query it or how. If there's any truth to hacking claims, even partial, the exposure isn't abstract: it's every driver's travel history, patterns, and location data sitting in a system that was apparently vulnerable enough to need a PR response. A company insisting "trust us" after a security scare is exactly the kind of moment that should make communities ask harder questions about why they let this infrastructure get installed in the first place.

Whether or not this specific incident holds up to scrutiny, it's a reminder that these networks are only as secure as the weakest link in a sprawling, poorly audited system — and the people most exposed are ordinary residents who never consented to being tracked.
