Honestly Though: WHAT the FLOCK? When Does Safety Become Surveillance? | S2 E9
The short version: A YouTube deep-dive on Flock Safety's ALPR network lays out the safety pitch alongside real accountability gaps, and the split-screen approach is exactly what this debate needs.
Our Take
Credit to the Honestly Though series on the Breathe Within Yoga channel for doing something rare in this space: separating confirmed fact from allegation from pure speculation instead of just picking a side and yelling. Flock's pitch is always the same — stolen cars recovered, missing people found, cases closed. That's real. What rarely gets equal airtime is what happens after the plate is scanned: months of historical travel data sitting in a database, documented cases of officers running searches that had nothing to do with an active investigation, and audit systems that depend on agencies policing themselves.
The video's willingness to flag Texas counties walking away from their Flock contracts, and to distinguish 'confirmed misuse' from 'viral claim that outran the evidence,' matters more than it sounds. This fight gets undermined every time someone overstates what these cameras can do — it hands skeptics an easy way to dismiss the whole conversation. The honest version is scary enough on its own: a for-profit company building a searchable map of where every driver has been, with drones, AI 'investigative tools,' and device fingerprinting now entering the roadmap.
If a network like this is already running in your county, you have a right to know where the cameras are and who's watching the watchers. Check our camera map to see what's nearby, and if you want to push back locally, our take-action page has the steps that actually move city councils.
