Flock cameras solve crime across Metro Atlanta

Flock · 4 years ago

The short version: A Flock-branded clip recycling a WSB news segment touts crime-solving wins in Atlanta without addressing accuracy, oversight, or data-sharing concerns.

Our Take

Notice whose name is on the upload: Flock itself. This isn't independent journalism questioning the technology — it's the company repackaging a friendly local news hit (WSB) as marketing content. When the vendor selling the cameras is also the one curating the "success stories," you should expect a highlight reel, not an audit.

Missing from these feel-good clips: how many plates get scanned to produce one arrest, what happens to the other 99.9% of innocent drivers' data, how long it's retained, who else can query it, and whether any of these "solves" could have happened through traditional policing. Metro Atlanta has dozens of agencies feeding into Flock's network, and that kind of scale deserves scrutiny, not a press release dressed up as news.

If cameras like these are popping up in your part of Atlanta — or anywhere else — check the map to see what's already been documented nearby, and visit take action if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your community.
